Cape Town - Online Dating hubs vow to beat the singles tax

Yesterday's singles tax post was indeed an April 1 joke. Well done to those clever fans that picked up on it and many thanks to those who supported us by liking, sharing and commenting on the matter. Because of all the support we'll keep the 20% discount valid till Sunday and that's no joke!

South Africa's biggest online dating hub is promising relief from a proposed new singles tax. Read the departmental official statement.

Under the proposed new tax, anyone who is single will be liable for an additional tax on their income. The extent of the tax is still under discussion, but it's understood it will be between 3% and 8% of post-PAYE earnings.

DatingBuzz founder and CEO, David Burstein has been a strong opponent of the tax since first it was mooted. He says being single is not always a choice, so punishing someone for being single simply isn't fair. He adds that about 65% of online South African singles have been, or are currently registered with an online dating site - most of them on DatingBuzz or on one of the company's partner sites.

"There are people who will pay the singles tax, because they will only really be happy when they are single. But for those who are looking, we felt it was our duty to do something to help. We can't fight the tax, but we can ease the pain a little with a 20% discount on all membership subscriptions."
